Is Winning the Heisman Good or Bad?

Glad I’m not up for this year’s Heisman Trophy (as if).  While finalists Colt McCoy of Texas, Toby Gerhart of Stanford, Mark Ingram of Alabama,  Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska; and Tim Tebow of Florida all are qualified to be named the best college football player for 2009, I’m not sure I’d want it.

Since its 1935 beginnings, only eight winners of the Heisman are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  This year’s recipient will be among many memorable names – like O.J. Simpson – and forgettable ones – like Jason White (who?).   There’s even a Top Ten Heisman Winners Who Failed at Life report. Winning kinda sounds like the Oscar curse - when the actors get the most prestigious award in film, then backslide to new low in movie mediocrity, accept a contract with Lifetime television and finally settle as game show participants.  In any case, two Virtual Cups of Joe to this year’s Heisman finalists.  May the best man win.

Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska should be awarded the Heisman – I think it's sad the QB's get the recognition yearly (for the most part) for the Heisman. Take Suh of Nebraska – fighting in the "trenches" and literally carrying Nebraska to a (near) Championship! ONLY IF NEBRASKA HAD AN OFFENSE TO ASSIST SUH, HE MIGHT OF BEEN AWARDED THE HEISMAN….
NOW, that Nebraska lost to Texas – a less than humble McCoy accepts beating Nebraska and gives little credit to Suh…..who put him on his butt several times throughout the game…I DON'T THINK MCCOY WANTS TO MEET SUH AGAIN.
    GO HUSKERS!!

I believe exposure is the key, especially if you become a media darling like a Tim Tebow or a QB in Texas named Colt. Seriously, how easy is it for the state of Texas to love that? Being hyped up in the media will put you on a pedestal -a pedestal which you won't have in the NFL. What's even more intriguing is to counter these college super stars, you have people like a Rod Smith, James Harrison and even Kurt Warner who didn't win any college awards or even drafted in the NFL. To re-state the obvious, college football greatness stops in college. The NFL makes you put on new "big boy" pants and the career sort of resets. BTW, Jason White was a QB for Oklahoma and I believe he had a short stint here for the Titans.
To preface my next comment, I am not a Nebraska fan by any means. Having said that, my vote would go to Ndamukong Suh. Too bad that my vote really doesn't count for a hill of beans. Personally, I think this guy would have no problem with NFL "big boy" pants and should have a good professional career.
My prediction: I only have one. That is, if Colt McCoy gets the Heisman, Ndamukong Suh will put a spin move on the MC and 'pancake' Colt at the podium just out of habit.

Excellent points, especially about the relationship of college ball to pro ball. Thanks for your insights, and keep the comments coming! And btw, Ingram was no surprise. If my hero Tebow couldn't win, I'm glad Ingram did.

I'm going with Doug on this.

If I could pick the Titans draft choice from the Heisman nominees, I would spend all of Bud's money and get N. SUH!!! Super Bowl here we come.
